Ron Paul wants the US out of NATO. Is that stupid?

I have extremely mixed feelings about NATO. On the one hand, it ures American hegemony in Europe and is a deterrent to Russia; but it is a mutual defense pact, so if Latvia goes to war with Russia, we're obligated to get involved. We're the ones who fight wars on behalf of NATO, rather than it being mutually beneficial or beneficial to us. From the Afghan War vets I've talked to, the European countries in NATO just sit around and eat punch and cookies at their bases in the areas that are not hot zones.
