Where does the Brooklyn accent originate?

Way back in the day when NYC was a 'melting pot' and immigrants from all over the world came to live here, which nationality[ies] contributed to the famous Brooklyn/New Yorker accent??? To me it sounds a little bit of Italian but I could be wrong: thus the question. Thanks!
