A good pet for a 16 year old?

I’m 16 years old and feel that I could really use a pet. I’m cyber-schooled (schooling from the computer) and my mom works full time so I’m alone most of the day. As expected, I get very lonely and feel I could use a companion. I really wanted to get a sugar glider, but their illegal in my state and seem to be a lot of work to take care of, plus their long lifespan is another problem. I’m looking for a cute unique pet that is fairly easy to take care of and enjoys a lot of attention. Preferably one that will form a close bond with its owner. But I don’t want something like a hamster, gerbil or guinea pig, I want something more creative. Any ideas?
